I painted this tunnel of pittosporum crassifolium during sunny afternoons in June 2010. Many of the hedges on the islands are made primarily using this tough New Zealand native known in its homeland of North Island as Karo. It makes an excellent windbreak and it both salt and wind resistant but would not stand heavy frost, which makes it perfect for Scilly. This path runs close to the sea, past Old Town Church and Carn Leh, towards Peninnis Head. I liked the rolling sweep of the setting which the tunnel creates with sunlight and shadows.
