This was painted on Scilly in May/June of 2011, sat by the beach path on the way towards town. As with other paintings, I have painted plants grown by my neighbour, Donald May. So the May in the title of this painting not only refers to the month and the May tree in flower in the background, but also to Donald as well!
These are bush type perennial echiums whose flower spikes form a candelabra shape and, unlike the tree echiums, the plant does not die after flowering. The flowers are also a deeper, more vibrant blue. Bees and other insects love them and there in a bee-impersonating hoverfly in the painting.
