Stephen Morris, Artist, Isles of Scilly

A recent watercolour, painted in autumn 2021, this is Old Town Bay. Actually most of the buildings in Old Town are more modern than its neighbour Hugh Town, but it was probably the earliest to be settled.
From where I painted, in the early days of sail, many boats would have been seen anchored just outside this breakwater. Old Town was defended then by Ennor Castle, sadly now in ruins behind me. However the waters off Old Town are relatively shallow and, when the Elizabethan Age saw the building of Star Castle protecting Hugh Town Harbour, most trade moved here.
